Early Life and Education
Growing up in Springdale, Dr. Young’s early life inspired a strong interest in healthcare. After finishing high school, he pursued a career in nursing, earning a Diploma in Nursing from the Western Memorial Regional Hospital School of Nursing in 2001. This experience exposed him to the challenges of providing medical care in remote regions and motivated him to continue his education in medicine.
Dr. Young later attended McMaster University, earning his medical degree in 2004. After completing his residency in rural family medicine at McMaster University, he focused on delivering healthcare to underserved communities, graduating in 2006. The clinic became a leader in rural healthcare innovation by offering in-person consultations and telehealth options.
At the same time, Dr. Young founded MEDICURO Virtual Health Inc., which offers virtual healthcare services to individuals throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. MEDICARE allows patients to consult with healthcare providers, receive prescriptions, and access health information from home. This virtual platform has proven particularly valuable for those living in remote areas, giving them access to healthcare professionals who might otherwise be out of reach.
Addressing Addiction and Occupational Health
Dr. Young’s impact on healthcare extended beyond primary care. One of his most notable achievements was creating Newfoundland and Labrador’s first rapid access addictions program. This initiative provides immediate care for individuals struggling with addiction, offering services in communities such as Pasadena, Stephenville, and St. John’s. The program has been widely praised for its ability to provide timely and practical support to those in need.
In addition to addiction care, Dr. Young developed a distributed occupational health and safety (OHS) model to improve workplace health across the province. This system provides comprehensive health services to prevent workplace injuries and promote employee wellness, ensuring workers have the resources to stay healthy and safe.
Teaching and Mentorship
Dr. Young’s commitment to healthcare also extends to teaching. He has served as a professor at Memorial University and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, mentoring students in family medicine and emergency care. Through his work as an educator, he has shaped the future of healthcare in Newfoundland and beyond, ensuring that new generations of healthcare providers are equipped to meet the challenges of rural and underserved areas.
He has also contributed to medical education through his involvement in committees that developed training programs for doctors and reviewed educational materials to maintain high-quality standards.
Giving Back to the Community
Dr. Young has remained committed to giving back to his community throughout his career. He sponsors local youth hockey teams, ensuring that young athletes have access to proper equipment and jerseys.
